Math and Literacy Today

In math we have been talking about different strategies that we can use to add numbers. Ask your child about some of the strategies we have been talking about! We have also been talking about these vocabulary words:

• commutative (property)
• identity  (property)
• addend
• sum
• counting on

Today we also started the conversation about finding a "good fit" book. I showed them some of my different shoes. We talked about how depending on the activity that you are doing, the right shoe can make a big difference!

I told them that this year in second grade I am so excited to see them grow as readers! In order to become better readers we need to read, read, read, read, read! We talked about how we need to practice in order to get better. But our practice only "counts" if we are doing it well. If we always practice something the wrong way, we won't get better at it.  


So when we choose books this year, we want to really focus on choosing books that are "just right" for us. There are definitely times when it is ok to read books that are easier or harder, but we want to spend the majority of our time reading books that match our level of reading.  


We talked about using the "5 Finger Rule."  See if your child can tell you what it is and how it can help him/her find a just right book!
