Personal Narratives

In January we will be going to the Children's Theater to see the play, "The Wizard of Oz!" (Watch for a permission slip to come home soon.) In preparation for the play we are working on special personal narratives this month. We are taking four of the main themes from the Wizard of Oz: solving a problem (the Scarecrow), caring/helping (the Tinman), courage/being brave (the Lion) and family (Dorothy).

This week I will be reading an example of each of these themes. Today we read Spoon. See if your child can tell you which theme it fit with! After we read the story, we talked together about how Spoon would tell his personal narrative fro his point of view. Students practiced writing a personal narrative for Spoon. Ask your child what he/she wrote about!

Thanksgiving Research

Today we worked on Thanksgiving research for our symbol book. Students worked with a partner and used a non-fiction Thanksgiving book. We had three topics that we took notes on: history, food and Thanksgiving today. We are practicing taking good notes using bullet points.

After we took notes, we shared together the different facts that we found. Next we wrote a short paragraph about Thanksgiving in our symbol book. Everyone is doing a great job on their research skills!
