Welcome back to another great week of being in second grade! Today we started practicing some of the things that we will be working on during independent work time while I teach guided reading. We started with a "landmark" book and one of my favorites! Today we simply enjoyed listening to the story. Tomorrow I will go back an re-read the story and point out some of the fantastic things that Janell Cannon does to make Stellaluna such a wonderful book! See if your child can tell you what a "landmark" book is!
We also started practicing our vocabulary work. We will be learning many new vocabulary words this year. We used the word "startle" from Stellaluna. After writing down the definition, students drew an example of startle and a non-example of startle. A non-example is the "opposite" of the word or shows what the word doesn't mean. I am also really emphasizing the importance of best effort and quality work in all the things that we do. Here is a great example of good quality work!
During read aloud this afternoon we read a great book called, Neville. See if your child can tell you what made the ending of Neville interesting and funny.
In math today we talked about exchanging money in groups of 10. For example 10 pennies can be exchanged for 1 dime. We cut out money that we will be using in a game called, "The Money Exchange Game." We will be playing it tomorrow!
